 Scientific Name: Hippocampus sp.

Classification


Phylum: Chordata - Dorsal tubular nerve cord, notochord and gill slits present.


Subphylum: Vertebrata - Vertebral column present.


Superclass: Gnathostoma -Jaws and paired appendages present.


Class: Actinopterygii - Ray-finned fishes.


Superorder: Teleostei - Bony fish proper.


Order: Mesichthyes- Intermediate form between that of the more primitive forms and the latest spiny-finned teleosts.


Genus: Hippocampus


Habit and Habitat: They swim upright swaying their tails and gracefully gyrating their trunks, holding a weed with their tails. They are mainly found in shallow tropical and temperate salt water throughout the world.They prefer sheltered areas, in sea grass meadows, coral reefs or mangroves. Jayakar's seahorse (Hippocampus jayakari) is found in the Western Indian Ocean, from the Red and Arabian seas to the central coast of Pakistan. It lives in seagrass beds, algae, soft-bottom substrates, sponges, and rocky habitats.


Characteristics


  1. Body is divided into head, trunk and tail. Head is produced anteriorly into tubular snout and backwardly into a crest.
  2. Body is covered by a rigid exoskeletal armour of ring-like bony plates.
  3. Gill clefts are reduced to a small opening. Gills are of special type in the form of special tufts and covered by operculum.
  4. Dorsal fin is single, ventral and caudal fins are absent. A small transparent pectoral fin is found on either side of head.
